Geriatric and Long-Term Care Research Center

》Purpose and History

Taiwan will become a "super-aged society" in 2026. In the future, the number of people above the age of 65 will reach 20% of the total population. The geriatric and long-term care industries have become one of the main focuses of the National 5+2 Industry Development Areas in recent years. In response to the social needs for geriatric and long-term care, our research center combines the aspect of aging process --- health, suboptimal health - frailty, disability/dementia and aspect of care --- health promotion, health management, prevention of disability, long-term care, and hospice care. The research center was established based on the perspective of health aging and prevention of dementia/disability and conducted empirical research projects on five dimensions as attached diagram; thus, the results from related research projects will be translated to industrial applications.

In addition, the research center combines the "Education Base for Elder Long-Term Care Industry" (EB-ELTCI) to educate long-term care talent. This will satisfy the need for future long-term care personnel, improve the geriatric and long-term care quality, fulfill universities society responsibility (USR) in terms of generating knowledge and cultivating talent.

In 2017, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced the "The Subsidies Regulations for the Optimization of Practical Environments in Technological and Vocational Schools ". In response to the subsidies regulations from MOE and government policies related to geriatric and long-term care and to fulfill the university's responsibility of talent cultivation, the College of Nursing of Chang Gung University of Science and Technology (CGUST) partnered with the Department of Senior Citizen Service Business of St. John's University, the Department of Nursing, Department of Geriatric Care and Welfare, and Department of Oral Hygiene of Ching Kuo Institute of Management and Health, and the Department of Nursing of Oriental Institute of Technology. All together, we proposed the project on establishment of the "Geriatric and Long-Term Care Education and Talent Cultivation Empirical Research Center" to the Ministry of Education in December, 2017.

The project was funded with a 35 million NTD subsidy through the MOE Education's "Optimization of Practical Environments in Technical and Vocational Schools Project-Constructing Training Bases for Industry Elites" in August, 2018. With the 41.32 million sponsored by the Board of Directors at CGUST, the project has estimated to a total budget of 76 million NTD., and the "Education Base for Elder Long-Term Care Industry"(EB-ELTCI). As a leading role in Taiwan, this education base was primarily build in the College of Nursing and was officially unveiled on November 29, 2019. This project is the milestone of the education of elder long-term care in the country.

Following the education base's mission of talent cultivation, the College of Nursing established the "Geriatric and Long-Term Care Research Center" on August 1, 2019, to coordinate talent cultivation and conduct related research projects. The purpose of this research center is to promote empirical research and applications related to geriatric and long-term care.

》Space and Facilities in the Center

The physical space of the center is combined with the "Education Base for Elder Long-Term Care Industry", which includes "Elderly Health Specialist Cultivation Center" and "Elderly Care Scenario Simulation Center". The center covers six major areas of geriatric and long-term care, including Cognitive Function Promotion, Dietary Nutrition, Social Participation, Oral Hygiene Care, Functional Performance Reconstruction, and Muscle Endurance Training. The total area of the base covers 1,520 square meters (459.83 pings)

We value the combination of the humanity and professionalism of science. The education base synchronized practical settings including simulated environments and equipment for geriatric and long-term care personnel training, for example: Sliding board, paralysis experience suit, disability experience suit, integrated care patient simulator, long-term care patient simulator, and geriatric care traditional treatment equipment, etc. Additionally, we have combined scientific equipment application with practical lessons, for example: Geriatric scenario classroom, Formosa Biomedical Technology Corporation's (FBTC) "I-health monitoring system", and FBTC's chronic illness animation health education TV wall. The education base uses HTC VR equipment to construct a virtual scenario for geriatric care. Students will be trained to face the elderly's situation with compassion and prepared for the future of clinical services in the area of geriatric and long-term care.
