Foreseeing the growing demand for high-quality medical personnel, Mr. Yong-Ching Wang founded the Institute with the aim of cultivating talented individuals in society and named the school after his father, Chung-Gung Wang, to commemorate him. A 2-year nursing internship program organized by the Ming Chi College of Technology (now known as Ming Chi University of Technology) in 1983 was the forerunner of the Institute. In 1988, Chang Gung Institute of Nursing (CGIN) began as a 2-year junior college program for nursing. The 5-year junior college program for nursing was later established in 1991, and CGIN was promoted to Chang Gung Institute of Technology (CGIT). CGIT started offering the 4-year college programs in 2004. In early 2004, the establishment of the Chiayi Campus was approved by the Ministry of Education, and student applications were accepted in the fall of the same year. CGIT transitioned into Chang Gung University of Science and Technology (CGUST) in August 2011. CGUST has set up two colleges and Center for General Education, three graduate programs, six departments and four centers.
