Research Center for Chinese Herbal Medicine

》Purpose

To strengthen the industry-academia collaboration efforts by academic staff and enhance the quality of academic research, the Chang Gung University of Science and Technology was granted approval in 2016 to establish the Research Center for Chinese Herbal Medicine. The purpose of establishment of the Center is to combine the abundant resources of vocational schools, corporations and hospitals within the university's excellent learning environment to provide powerful support for the integration of intra- and extra-university professional teams and experts as well as the application of relevant technologies. The ultimate aim is to create an inter-disciplinary research center specializing in health and nutrition, aesthetic medicine and Chinese herbal medicine technologies.

The Center consists of the following four major research platforms established by the academic staff of the Department of Cosmetic Science, the Division of Basic Medical Sciences of the Department of Nursing, the Graduate School of Health Industry Technologies, and the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: The platform for preparation and chemical analysis of Chinese herbal medicine; platform for cell function assessments; platform for animal model assessment studies; and the platform for research of human metabolic functions. Together, these form an integrated chain for the extraction, assessment, analysis and R&D of Chinese herbal medicine ingredients. In addition, the Center provides assistance to the industry through overall assessment during the development of Chinese herbal medicinal products, as well as shortening of the process of making production practical and the process of technology transfer. The Center thereby achieves targets such as cost reduction and acceleration of the analysis and testing processes.

》Key development areas

  • Integration and establishment of university-wide common research teams and platforms, in order to promote inter-disciplinary, industry-academia collaboration in research
  • Establishment of Chinese herbal medicine research processes and research platforms for industry-academia collaboration and incubation, so as to enhance the university's industry-academia research capabilities

》Features

Four major research platforms have been planned for the Research Center. They will form an integrated chain for performing screening and analyses of active ingredients of Chinese herbal medicine, cell assessments, animal studies, and research of human metabolic functions. This will build links between basic research and clinical industry research, place equal emphasis on academic research and industrial applications, promote industry-academia collaboration, and provide technologies and platforms currently lacking in the industry. The Center also hopes to cultivate research talent who can effectively combine theory and practice, thereby becoming a distinguishing feature of this university's research.

》Development targets

To perform screening and scientific assessment of the active ingredients of Chinese herbal medicine through the four major platforms listed below, so as to achieve the goal of developing new drugs from Chinese herbal medicine or natural products.

  • Platform for preparation and chemical analysis of Chinese herbal medicine--Performing extraction of active ingredients of Chinese herbal medicine and chemical composition analysis
  • Platform for cell function assessments--Establishing cell models to assess the impact of the active ingredients of Chinese herbal medicine on cell functions
  • Platform for animal assessment studies--Establishing animal models to perform animal studies and assessment of the active ingredients of Chinese herbal medicine
  • Platform for research in human metabolic functions--Establishing human models to assess the impact of active ingredients of Chinese herbal medicine on human metabolic functions

Research Center for Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese herbal medicine was harvested and performed the extraction of active ingredients in Platform for preparation and chemical analysis of Chinese herbal medicine. Chemical composition was identified by chemical fingerprint. After checking the active extract or ingredient from Chinese herbal medicine, we used different methods to analyze the functions by cell models, animal models and further as the clinical trials. In cell model, we assessed the impact of the active ingredients of Chinese herbal medicine on cell functions, such as enzyme activity inhibition, protein mechanism study and gene function analysis. In animal model, we investigated the active ingredients of Chinese herbal medicine on animal studies, including pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetic assessment and toxicological test. Following the results from cell and animal studies, we assessed the impact of active ingredients of Chinese herbal medicine on human metabolic functions. By performing screening and scientific assessment of the active ingredients of Chinese herbal medicine through all the systems, the goal of developing new drugs from Chinese herbal medicine or natural products could be achieved.
